Rick Hendrick visits Oshawa Assembly Plant to celebrate start of 2012 Camaro ZL1 production




OSHAWA, Ontario – The Oshawa Assembly Plant today celebrated the start of regular production of the hotly-anticipated 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in a ceremony with employees and invited guests, including team owner Rick Hendrick.


“This is an exciting new chapter in the ongoing revival of the tremendously popular Chevrolet Camaro,” said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of GM of Canada. “The new 2012 Camaro ZL1 is the most-powerful Camaro ever produced by Chevrolet and further demonstrates the flexible capabilities of the award-winning Oshawa Assembly Plant.”


“Through a disciplined approach and a relentless focus on execution, the Oshawa team has worked efficiently to ensure a successful, high-quality launch of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1,” stated Dan Hermer, plant manager at the Oshawa Assembly Plant. “New product mandates like the Camaro ZL1 are testaments to the calibre of the workforce in Oshawa,” added Chris Buckley, president of the Canadian Auto Workers Local 222


Employees were joined by Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, to celebrate the start of regular production. Hendrick, a Camaro enthusiast who purchased the first 2010 Camaro Coupe and the first 2011 Camaro Convertible, now also has purchased the first Camaro ZL1 available for public sale. In all three cases, Hendrick acquired the purchase rights through the Barrett-Jackson auction, with all proceeds benefitting local charities.


“I had the opportunity to visit the plant last January when they started production of the 2011 Camaro Convertible,” said Hendrick, who has a record 10 car owner championships in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. “As a Chevy enthusiast, it’s an honor to spend time at such an impressive facility and meet the people who produce some of world’s most incredible high-performance cars. They’ve raised the bar again with the new Camaro ZL1, and I’m excited to be back in Oshawa to experience it firsthand.”


The reintroduction of the ZL1 to the Camaro lineup not only acknowledges a unique period in Camaro’s first generation, but a new high performance benchmark for the fifth generation Camaro.


The heart of the Camaro ZL1 is a supercharged 6.2L engine, SAE-rated at 580 horsepower (432 kW) and 556 lb.-ft. of torque (754 Nm) – making it the most-powerful production Camaro ever. The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe accelerates from 0 to 96 km/h in 3.9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 297 km/h.


The first retail production Camaro ZL1 features a black exterior with the optional Exposed Carbon Fiber Weave Hood Insert and power Sunroof. The interior is black leather with sueded microfiber inserts not only on the seat and dash, but also the steering wheel and shift knob.

Chevrolet will give away 20 Brand New 2012 Chevrolets during the contest, including a $40,235 2012 Chevrolet Volt. 2013 Malibu On The Way To Chevy Dealerahips






The first shipments of the all new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu just left the factory and are on trucks headed to Chevy dealership throughout the States.

One of the objectives General Motors had with the new 2013 Malibu was to beat the 2013 Ford Fusion to dealerships, which are scheduled to arrive late summer or early fall.

Initial Malibu models will be the Malibu ECO, which feature’s GM’s eAssist. Power will come from a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. It’s supplemented by a 15-hp electric motor that provides added power during acceleration. The eAssist system also captures energy while braking and restarts the engine during eco start/stop.


The Fairfax plant has produced more than 1.4 million Malibus since 2003. It operates three shifts and has more than 4,000 employees, making it the largest manufacturing employer in the Kansas City area, according to the Kansas City Business Journal.

Chevrolet Returns To Number One In 2011 Passenger Car Sales


Chevrolet posted its best annual retail sales increase in 35 years. Fueled by the wildly successful sales of the Cruze compact sedan, sales of Chevrolet compact cars nearly doubled over 2010.


"Leading the U.S. industry in passenger car sales in our centennial year proves that we have transformed the Chevrolet product lineup and are delivering the high-quality, fuel-efficient, expressively designed cars that more and more people want,” said Alan Batey, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet Sales and Service. “We are confident we can continue to build on the momentum with the new Sonic and the new Malibu Eco arriving in dealer showrooms in the coming weeks,” Batey added.


U.S. sales of the Chevrolet Cruze totaled 231,732 last year. As the best-selling Chevrolet nameplate, the Cruze has sold over 1 million units in the three short years since it’s launch.


Another fact contributing to Chevrolet’s sales jump is the the Chevrolet Silverado pickup as the second best selling vehicle in the U.S. with over 415,130 sold, a 12.2 percent jump from 2011.


The all-new Sonic posted a 52 percent jump up and over the vehicle it replaced and the refreshed fifth-generation Camaro racked up sales of 88,000, up 8 percent from last year.

A Chevrolet Is Sold Somewhere In The World Every 6.6 Seconds



After celebrating its 100th birthday in November, Chevrolet is on track to set an all-time global sale record in 2011, having sold 4.8 million units through the end of November.

According to Russ Clark, Chevrolet's marketing manager for mid-sized and performance cars, "Chevrolet's market share around the world has increased by nearly one half of a point this year, as it also steadily advances a goal of becoming a global brand."

One in five Chevrolets are sold in Latin America, where it the number-one brand with a market share of 18.7 percent, while Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Columbia are all now growing markets for Chevrolet products from passenger cars to trucks and sport utility vehicles.

Sales of Chevrolet passenger cars have meanwhile climbed 34 percent in recent months thanks to the overhaul of its passenger cars, with the Chevrolet Cruze as the best selling compact car in the US, while sales of the Malibu have surpassed those of 2010.

Additionally, both the Corvette and Camaro, which has bested Mustang for the second year in a row, are now tops in their respective segments, Clark noted, while the all-new subcompact Chevrolet Sonic is turning so fast dealers have only a 17-day supply on their lots.

While Jeff Gordon, as well as the rest of his NASCAR colleagues, may be enjoying Christmas with family and friends, his sponsor, the AARP Foundation’s Drive to End Hunger campaign, is taking no holiday.


“An estimated 8.8 million Americans, 50 and older, are at risk of hunger, including 4.9 million 50- to 59-year olds,” AARP Foundation President Jo Ann Jenkins said. “The holiday season is here but there is no off-season in the fight to help people facing hunger.”


Earlier this year, AARP became NASCAR’s first cause-based primary sponsor, featuring its Drive to End Hunger on Jeff Gordon’s No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. The primary purpose of the sponsorship is to not only raise the visibility of the issue of hunger, but also to raise cash and donations in NASCAR venues throughout the country.


“We have just really enjoyed a wonderful working relationship with Jeff Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports as part of our entrée into the NASCAR world,” Jenkins said. “When we really thought about putting this whole campaign together, we said we didn’t want to have partners who didn’t really believe in solving the issue of hunger in this country.”


“I really believe that we can make a sizable dent in solving this issue, especially for those who are 50 years or older and vulnerable,” Jenkins continued. “So, we entered into this relationship with Jeff and agreed that it was going to be the Drive to End Hunger car because it really was going to be all about ending hunger. And all of the proceeds were going to go to helping this issue.”


Being new to the NASCAR scene, Jenkins admitted that AARP were tremendously fortunate to partner with one of the sport’s biggest names.


“It didn’t hurt that Jeff has won a number of races and that he is the eighth most popular sports figure in this country,” Jenkins said. “He has really embraced this whole cause, doing it not only when we ask him to but when he is talking about his own charities. So, it’s really worked out well for us.”


The other surprise for the AARP Foundation has been the success of not only raising awareness of the issue of hunger, but also raising dollars that turn immediately into food for those in need. The most overwhelming aspect of the Foundation sponsorship, however, has been learning just how generous NASCAR fans really are.


“Our goal for this year was to raise awareness and to raise funds,” Jenkins said. “We have tried to gear our awareness campaign to help local nonprofits and soup kitchens get what they need to solve this issue.”


“So far this year, we have raised over $14 million in commitments, in cash, donations or multi-year commitments from corporations,” Jenkins continued. “Almost 25% of that has come from individual donor contributions which is amazing.”


“We’ve reached over 123,000 NASCAR fans at our interactive tents at races around the country,” Jenkins said. “Almost 32 million people have been engaged with us in some sort of social media. So, we couldn’t be more happy with the results.”


“This was our first entrée into the sport and it has exceeded any of our expectations,” Jenkins continued. “The NASCAR fans really understand the issue of hunger and have embraced that.”


“The first thing they ask is how they can help,” Jenkins said. “Individuals really can make a contribution to ending hunger and I think we’ve hit it out of the ball park with our work with NASCAR and Jeff Gordon.”


Now that the first season for the AARP Foundation’s Drive to End Hunger campaign is in the books, the AARP Foundation is looking forward to seeing what next year has in store for their partnership with Jeff Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports.


“We’re excited about the 2012 racing season and we’re putting the plans in place as to how we can continue to do what we’ve done in 2011 but engage even more people at the tracks on our platform next year,” Jenkins said. “We’re going to try a number of fundraising events at the tracks and we’re also going to be working with our AARP State offices, getting them to engage in hunger campaigns.”


“We’re also expanding our partnerships with other nonprofits,” Jenkins continued. “Today we signed off on eight to ten innovation grants going to other nonprofits who think they have a sustainable solution to solving the issue of hunger.”


“Our goal is to amplify the work of nonprofits and the community in solving the issue of hunger.”
Although the 2012 season is right around the corner, the AARP Foundation is working especially hard over the Christmas break and off-season to ensure that all NASCAR fans understand that hunger takes no holiday.


“We are working right now on keeping the message alive,” Jenkins said. “We’re updating our Drive to End Hunger website on a daily basis.”


“We’re pushing out a new YouTube channel focused on Drive to End Hunger,” Jenkins continued. “We’re engaged in a pilot program in Georgia to simplify the SNAP application for Food Stamps, especially for the senior population.”


“There isn’t much of an off-season with NASCAR but we’re already engaged with Jeff and the folks at Hendrick with what we’re going to be doing starting early February to kick off the season,” Jenkins said. “We’re excited about it.”


The message of the AARP Foundation for the holidays is simple.
“The good thing about this Drive to End Hunger campaign is that each person can make a difference,” Jenkins said. “We know that if we give $1 to a local food bank, they can turn that into $7 in food by purchasing in bulk.”


“In this holiday season, when so many are in need, people really can make a difference.”
