2007 Saturn IonBase MSRP $12,300
The 2007 Saturn Ion is available in a unique Quad Coupe body style that blends the look of a sporty coupe with the convenience of small, rear-hinged doors that ease access to the back seat. The Ion's base engine also has more power than most of its competitors, while it has fuel economy that's near the head of the pack. And for patriotic car buyers, it ranks as one of the least expensive American-made cars.

![]() Both Ion 2 and Ion 3 models have a standard 145-horsepower, 2.2L "Ecotec" engine; a 175-horsepower, 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder, with variable valve timing (VVT), is optional. Both engines have counter-rotating balance shafts and direct accessory mounting for smooth operation. With either engine, a five-speed manual transmission is standard and a four-speed automatic is optional. At the top of the Ion range is the high-performance Red Line model. It brings a 2.0L supercharged four-cylinder engine making 205 horsepower, along with a heavy-duty five-speed manual gearbox, short-throw shifter, a limited-slip differential, 17-inch gunmetal-finish forged wheels with Z-rated tires, projector-beam fog lamps, equal-length drive shafts, and a lowered sport suspension. Leather seats are also standard. The Red Line can accelerate to 60 mph in only 6.2 seconds, according to GM. On Ion 2 and Ion 3 models, an available Enhanced Performance Package brings thicker stabilizer bars, and a stiffer overall suspension for more nimble handling. There's also a leather trim package available on the Ion 3 that adds leather upholstery and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Head-curtain side air bags, which protect front and rear occupants, are optional across the line. Anti-lock brakes are optional on Ion 2 and Ion 3 models but standard on the Red Line. Sound systems range from the four-speaker CD deck that's standard on the Ion 2 up to an optional Saturn Advanced Audio System, which includes a 160-watt amp and six speakers. All sound systems include an auxiliary input jack. After a slight redesign for last year, the Saturn Ion returns for 2007 with very few changes. The optional 2.4L engine is now rated at 175 horsepower, five more than in 2006. The Ion is slated to be replaced next year by the new Astra hatchback.
